Report for 2008-09

The Marketing of Higher Education SIG of the Academy of Marketing had yet another successful year in 2008. The highlight of the annual activities was the fourth conference of the SIG held at Minho University Portugal April 1-3 2009. We had a total 45 paper presentations including a doctoral colloquium. Nationalities represented at the conference included the hosts Portugal, Spain, Israel, Turkey, Greece, Cyprus, Romania, Poland, Zimbabwe, Norway, England, and Ireland. The theme of the conference was Research and Practice in Higher Education Marketing.

For the first time we had prizes for best papers. First prize was awarded to Helena Alves of University of Beira Interior Portugal who presented a fascinating paper on ‘The relationship between student satisfaction, loyalty and word of mouth’. Joint second prize was awarded to Andy Adcroft, Robert Willis and John Teckman of Surrey University with a paper entitled: ‘Hospitals No, Universities maybe. Will HE in the UK become competitive?’ and to Geraldine Ahearn of Vegas Communications at the National University of Ireland for her paper on ‘The impact of student choice on HE Marketing’.

We had two key note speakers at the conference. Paul Gibbs of Middlesex University and Rosemary Stamp of Stamp Consulting both spoke passionately and stimulatingly on aspects of marketing in HE.  Antoni Remesar of University of Barcelona gave a key note to the Doctoral Colloquium.

Six papers were selected from the conference and submitted to the Journal of Marketing Higher Education edited by Tom Hayes in the USA. The papers are currently undergoing the review process.

The SIG continues to thrive on the goodwill commitment of a number of colleagues who selflessly avail of their time. These are:

  • Jane Hemsley-Brown, senior lecturer marketing at University of Surrey
  • Chris Chapleo at University of Portsmouth
  • Jonathan Ivy of Birmingham City University College
  • Dan Bennett senior lecturer Marketing at University of Brighton
  • Edith Caulfield, marketing and external relations administrator at Queens University Belfast
Together they perform an invaluable role ranging from reviewing conference abstracts and papers, formal and informal communication with various publics, recruitment of new members, communicating with external organisations and helping with the organisation of our annual conferences.
