Professor Malcolm McDonald Student Essay Prize 2012

The Academy of Marketing offers you the chance to win the 2012 Professor Malcolm McDonald Student Essay Competition. This year’s written essay must discuss the following:

“Segmentation of customers based on their needs and profiles is more important than ever. Discuss the role of new social media as tools to help businesses better understand consumer needs.”

The competition is open to all undergraduates and postgraduates studying marketing in a Higher Education Institution Business School. Entries are limited to one per student. The work must be original and authored by the student submitting the work. You should follow the usual format for an essay.

Entries will be judged against the following criteria. They should:
  • be well written in terms of structure, grammar and spelling
  • not exceed the 2,000 word length limit
  • show an understanding of relevant theoretical concepts
  • demonstrate an understanding of how theory applies to practice through the use of examples.
The prize is £400 and will be awarded to the winner by Professor Malcolm McDonald at the Academy of Marketing Conference Gala Dinner at St. Mary’s Stadium in Southampton on 5th July 2012. The Academy will pay up to £100 in expenses for the winner to attend the dinner.

Deadline for submissions is midnight GMT Friday 20 April 2012.

Submissions should be by email (along with a completed copy of the Entry Form) to the Academy of Marketing Administrative Office at admin@academyofmarketing.org Submissions should be in Word format and should be virus checked before submission.

Terms and Conditions
  • By submitting an essay to the competiton, entrants confirm that they are the sole author of the essay and that it is an original work. The Academy of Marketing reserves the right to verify the originality of submissions using plagiarism detection software.
  • Entrants grant the Academy of Marketing a non-exclusive licence to reproduce the paper in the Academy of Marketing Newsletter and on the Academy of Marketing website.
  • The Conference Host and the Academy of Marketing reserve the right to use the name and photographs of the prize winner for marketing and publicity purposes, unless the prizewinner specifically notifies the Academy otherwise.
  • The prize will be in the form of a cheque in the amount of 400 pounds sterling, and the recipient will be responsible for any associated bank charges if applicable.
  • If the winner is unable to attend the dinner, the prize will be accepted on their behalf by a member of the Academy of Marketing, and sent to them by post.
  • The 100 pounds sterling expenses are to cover travel and accommodation costs for the winner to attend the Academy of Marketing Conference Dinner on 5th July 2012. The winner will receive an expenses form to complete and return with the necessary receipts.
